Planting & Growing Tips

  • Do not stake your tree for longer than necessary.  It can make the roots weak.
  • Dig the planting hole for perennials, trees and shrubs 3 times the width of the plant.
  • Most annual tags that give plant information give you the width and height of a plant when it is full grown (in Michigan that would be August).  So if it says plant 10” apart you may want to plant it only 6” apart to get a full look.
  • If you need to cover annuals from frost, use a sheet.  Do not use plastic.
  • Anyone can grow plants.  Some of the most common mistakes people make are:
    • Cheap or old soil
    • Putting sun plants in shade or vice versa
    • Over or under watering
    • Planting too early or late in the season
    • Not pruning correctly

Do NOT despair!  We can help with all of this! J
