Watering Tips:

  • Do you have a container that is in hot sun or dries out easily?  Buy a bag of sphagnum moss, wet it in a bucket for 20 minutes, throw a wet handful of it into any pot or window box that dries out easily.  Sphagnum moss will retain 20 times its weight in water.  Use in the bottom of cocoa moss baskets also.  Cocoa moss does not hold any water.   It is difficult to keep wet.  Water seems to run right through it.
  • Have a problem watering your flowering pouch?  Buy soil moist spikes and put one in each hole.  Cut an old piece of hose and slip it down the back of the pouch.  Water into the top of the hose.  This will allow the water to get to the bottom of the plants.
  • We have self watering baskets and patio planters, soil moist crystals, and soils that have soil moist crystals to help you maintain planters in hot areas.  Don’t be a slave to the hose! J
  • After the first year of planting a perennial, it will not need to be watered daily like an annual.  Usually rainfall will be sufficient.  Do not forget to water in a dry spell, however!
  • Our two best plant recommendations for a hot, dry area are gazania daisy and moss rose (portulaca).  Both are annuals and require a lot less water than other annuals.  Good choice for cemetery planting if you cannot visit often to water.
